Fall 1979 student registration data for the seven Hawaii community colleges were examined to determine faculty teaching load as measured by average semester hours taught, average hours in contact with students, and average class size. The study revealed that Fall 1979 enrollment was slightly higher than the previous Fall's; that there were numerically and proportionately more part-time students than in previous years; and that students were generally carrying lighter credit loads. The data showed that while slightly more courses were offered, fewer classes were scheduled. Instructor semester hours increased by 105 semester hours and instructor contact hours increased by 126 contact hours. On the other hand, student registrations and student semester and contact hours were the lowest in five years. With regard to class size, the study revealed that the number and proportion of classes with less than 11 students had decreased and that the average class size (24 students) was the lowest in five years. Teaching loads remained at about the same level as in 1978: the average semester hours per full-time equivalent (FTE) instructor was 13.3, the average contact hours was 16.1, and the productivity ratio was 308. The faculty-student ratio of one to 20 was the lowest in five years. The report provides tables illustrating faculty load data by college and course. (JP)
