This report presents 1980 census data on the geographic distribution of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The 1980 census was the first one to identify the total Asian and Pacific Islander population and its subgroups. Information on the total Asian and Pacific Islander population is shown for the United States, regions, divisions, and States. Data for the same areas are also presented for the Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Asian Indians, Vietnamese, Korean, Hawaiian, Guamanian, Samoan, and "Other Asian and Pacific Islander" populations. The introduction discusses (1) the distribution of the total Asian and Pacific Islander population and its status as one of the fastest growing groups of the 1970's; (2) the composition and distribution of the Asian population; (3) recent arrivals from Southeast Asia; and (4) the composition and distribution of the Pacific Islander population. A chapter on definitions and explanations is provided, along with an appendix discussing the accuracy of the data. In addition to ten text tables there are five detailed tables: (1) Asian and Pacific Islander Population: 1980; (2) Percent Distribution of the Asian and Pacific Islander Population: 1980; (3) Total Asian and Pacific Islander Population by Rank: 1980 and 1970; (4) Asian Population: 1980; and (5) Pacific Islander Population by Type: 1980.
