The Optimum and Maximum Size of the University.
Standing Conference of Rectors and Vice-Chancellors of the European Universities, Geneva (Switzerland).
This document, which deals in whole with the optimum and maximum size of the university, is broken down into 4 major chapters, each of which was written by an expert in the particular field. The first discusses the unity of the university and studies: (1) the unity of the university, including in particular the relationship between the university and industry; (2) the mission of the university, including in particular the role of research in university education; and (3) the problems arising out of the coexistence of universities and "grandes ecoles techniques." The second chapter, entitled "The Responsibility of the University towards Society and towards Itself," discusses in part: (1) the university as a community of the teaching staff and the student body; (2) the university and its faculties (including the maximum size of a faculty); (3) the danger of a decline of quality in a university; and (4) the freedom and autonomy of the university. The third chapter deals with the conditions of access to the universities in Europe, and the fourth and final chapter deals with the responsibility and the representation of the student body, including statutes and method of selection of the representatives. Minutes of the 7th, 8th and 9th Meetings of the Permanent Committee of the Standing Conference of Rectors and Vice Chancellors of the European Universities are also presented. The chapters are presented first in French, then in German, and then in English. Related documents are HE 003 861 and HE 003 863. (HS)
