"It Was Like I Was There": Inspiring Engagement through Virtual Reality
Clarice M. Moran; Maya K. Woodall
English Journal, v109 n1 p90-96 2019
VR is not a space-age novelty for intense video gamers. It is a legitimate digital tool that can enhance the English language arts (ELA) curriculum and enrich--but not replace--traditional pedagogy. And it is surprisingly easy to implement, even for introductory-level technology users. In this article, the authors discuss the strategies and tools they used to integrate VR into a unit on Harper Lee's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird." As the authors both love and incorporate digital tools regularly in their work, they wanted to know if VR's multimodality would enhance students' literacy skills, including deepening their experiences with texts. Integrating the technology into an existing unit was far easier than either of the authors imagined.
