An Analysis of Status Consistency of the Projected Frames of Reference: A Racial Comparison of Males in Selected Low-Income Areas of the Rural South.
Pelham, John T.
The specific objective was to study racial differences in the consistency dimension of desired status objects (aspirational frame of reference) and expected objects (anticipated frame of reference) of adolescent males from the rural South. Specific observations were made on (1) racial differences in consistency of aspirational frames of reference of rural males, (2) racial differences in consistency of anticipated frames of reference of rural males, and (3) differences in consistency of aspirational and anticipated frames of reference of Negro and white rural males. The sample was composed of selected high school sophomores from low-income areas of Texas and Georgia. Conclusions indicated that the aspirational and anticipated frames of reference of large proportions of both races were inconsistent to some extent. A comparison of inter-frame differences in consistency revealed a further similarity in that the aspirational frames of reference of both races tended to be more consistent than were the anticipated frames, although the tendency was more pronounced among whites.
