The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Catholicism: Ideological and Institutional Constraints on System Change in English and French Primary Schooling.
Sharpe, Keith
Comparative Education, v33 n3 p329-48 Nov 1997
Draws on Weber to argue that clear and persistent differences between French and English primary education arise from deeply embedded cultural traditions through which fundamental value orientations are mediated and that these contrasting value orientations represent secularized educational versions of French Catholicism and English Protestantism. Discusses implications for possibilities of system change in each country. Contains 25 references. (Author/SV)
