An Approach to a Faculty Professional Development Seminar
Bendickson, Mary; Griffin, Karen
New Directions for Community Colleges, n152 p25-32 Win 2010
An effective faculty is essential to student success, and faculty development programs help sustain that effectiveness. Central to the faculty development programs at Hillsborough Community College (HCC) in Tampa, Florida, is the philosophy that they should lead to strengthened teaching and learning and, ultimately, improved student success. At the end of the 1990s, the college's administration and faculty agreed to include two graduate-level courses as a professional development requirement for nontenured faculty, based in part on the fact that many of the newly hired faculty had little or no experience with community colleges and college-level teaching expectations. These two courses, The Community College in Higher Education and Seminar in College Teaching, are offered by identical or similar names throughout the Florida university system, and the thought was that nontenured faculty would gain a well-grounded understanding of not only the Florida community college system but also the requirements of being a college faculty member. This chapter examines Hillsborough Community College's approach to imparting to its faculty members an understanding of the community college as an educational institution. The authors describe plans for developing the in-house alternative to Seminar in College Teaching.
