For most students, classes in the arts are more than just a means of gathering credits, they are about getting involved in what the students like, at least for a period. They feel that the classes are a healthy escape, a time to recuperate and do what they do well. In the art classrooms, music studios, and video labs, students feel they are part of a family of friends, which brings a feeling of belonging that they don't get in other classrooms. They establish new foundations, creating their own culture within an academic setting. They believe that it broadens their perspectives and integrity and are able to see their artistic abilities as true reflections of themselves. The skills that are necessary to be successful in the arts transfer into academics. Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) students generally do very well on SATs, ACTs, and Florida's state assessments--some students have had perfect scores on those tests--and many are members of the National Honor Society. Their talents open up scholarship opportunities. This article describes how students in the VPA magnet program of the Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Florida, pursue their passions and academic excellence.
