Superintendent Compensation: A Multi-State Study of Select Contract Provisions
Cox, Edward P.
ERS Spectrum, v23 n2 p4-11 Spr 2005
What are the financial rewards and job protection provisions currently being negotiated into superintendent employment contracts? This article presents the results of a study of superintendents' contracts in three states--South Carolina, Florida, and North Carolina. All 268 superintendents in the three states were surveyed and an analysis made for salary, potentially contentious contract provisions, and fringe benefit packages. The study also addressed total compensation, salary differentials by district enrollment, and the utilization of pay-for-performance and severance provisions. The survey responses point to the importance of maintaining an open dialogue with the board regarding this subject. (Contains 5 tables.)
