An Examination of the Value of Service Learning Hours in Broward County Public Schools
Baum, Richard G.; Clement, Russell W.
ERS Spectrum, v24 n1 p23-26 Win 2006
The present study was conducted to examine the value of service learning hours to the Broward County community and illustrate the benefits of community service to students as well as the community at large. The total number of service learning hours contributed by Broward County high school students was aggregated from the district's data warehouse. Results from the study revealed that although students were not monetarily compensated for the service learning hours performed, they contributed--over a four-year span--a value of approximately $25 million in service hours to the Broward County community at Florida's minimum wage rate of $6.15 per hour. Broward County high school students, over their cumulative high school careers, contributed more than four million service learning hours by the 2004-05 school year. (Contains 2 tables.)
