More Than a Matter of Taste: Ensuring Students Eat Right
Ford, Sandra
School Business Affairs, v79 n5 p13-15 May 2013
Studies have substantiated the link between proper nutrition and success in the classroom and beyond. Research has also found that eating breakfast is associated with improved classroom behavior and higher math, reading, and standardized test scores. Manatee County, Florida offers free breakfast to all students in 14 schools. Many students arrive at school hungry, but after a full breakfast, they are ready to learn. Manatee County principals report improved attendance, reduced tardiness, and improved test scores. Although most schools across the country offer breakfast in the cafeteria each morning, too many children miss out on the morning meal. Thanks to a grant from the Walmart Foundation, the Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom are helping educators find creative ways to overcome barriers to breakfast. The partners have worked in public school districts across the country, developing a best practices model to bring principals, teachers, school nutrition staff, custodians, and all key players to the table to make breakfast in the "classroom" a seamless part of the school day. Whether it's breakfast in the classroom or a grab-and-go program, these successes require school leaders to foster open dialogues, cooperation, and planning among the entire school team to design healthy solutions that maximize each school's unique strengths to meet students' nutritional needs. District officials can and should use this approach to address lunchtime challenges too. School nutrition professionals are already making healthy changes, but we need the support of the entire school community to make those changes a success. By acknowledging the importance of good nutrition to academic success and working together to promote healthier choices for our students, we can help them make the most of their opportunities.
