A Phenomenological Study Exploring Factors Leading Veteran K-12 Teachers to Attrition
Nicole Hagler
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Leo University
Teaching is a stressful profession that requires individuals to balance their time, resources, and emotions. While many districts have plans in place to support the needs of their new teachers, few resources exist for those individuals who have given the most to the profession--veteran teachers. Attrition in education negatively impacts stakeholders, such as students, administrators, guardians, and fellow educators. When veteran teachers leave the profession, the devastating consequences are a loss of expertise, mentorship, and guidance. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the perceived job-related factors that lead to attrition for veteran K-12 educators in Central Florida. To gain a deeper understanding of perceived attrition factors for veteran teachers, this study consisted of open-ended interviews and collected letters from veteran teachers with more than 10 years of experience in Central Florida. Data were analyzed to determine themes of perceived attrition factors and organized into work-related and non-work-related categories derived from Tippens et al.'s (2013) attrition and retention factors for agricultural teachers.
