The Impact of High School Students' Algebra 1 EOC Scores on Graduation Rates
Julie Eberhard Smith
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Leo University
This study investigated the effect a computer intervention program has on student proficiency in the Algebra 1 End of Course (EOC) examination. This study utilized the intervention math program IXL Math, a computerized program that targets individual students' skill practice and supports students' need to accelerate mastery of Algebra 1 skills in addition to addressing gaps with math skills and improving proficiency. Florida has a testing requirement for students to earn their high school diploma. The Algebra 1 EOC examination is one of those tests that require a student to earn a proficiency score to meet this requirement. High school students in Florida who take Algebra 1 in high school struggle to pass the Algebra 1 EOC exam, which in turn, affects their ability to earn a standard high school diploma. The study used a quasi-experimental quantitative research design to show the cause-effect relationship between using a computerized intervention program with and without fidelity. The Mann-Whitney U test was used with IBM SPSS software and Statistics Kingdom to compare the effect of high-fidelity usage on ninth and tenth grade Algebra 1 EOC scores. Major findings are discussed, offering recommendations for future practice and research. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
