The Untold Stories of Community College Latinx Student Retention
Diana Wright
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The Florida State University
This qualitative study provided a compilation of Latinx student stories and experiences at a medium-sized community college located on the west coast of Central Florida to further understand student challenges with persisting to degree or certificate of completion and motivational factors contributing to re-enrollment after a stop out period. Increasing post-secondary institutional knowledge on how to support and respond to the needs of the youngest and fastest growing minority group in the United States will help Latinx students accomplish their academic goals, increase workforce and citizenship, and strengthen the U.S. economy. Retention theories were evaluated to explore how specific programs and environments shape the experiences of Latinx students and intersect with Latin culture. Bean and Metzner's (1985) nontraditional undergraduate student attrition model was used to guide the questions employed in the research. Qualitative data was obtained through a collection of seven interviews that provided narratives to inform the research questions from the students' perspectives on persistence. Students identified problems in persistence related to family income, challenges with language, employment challenges, and more. Recommendations for future directions are offered.
