Mid-Career Teacher Retention as It Relates to Administrative Support and Salary Compensation
Corinne Peters-Dictor
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Leo University
Nationwide, teacher retention is a growing problem, resulting in a decrease in expertise and affecting student success. Historically the emphasis has been on recruiting and retaining teachers in the first five years of their teaching career. Recent statistics show that teachers with more experience are choosing to leave the profession. To address the underrepresentation in research, this study explores why mid-career teachers (8-23 years of experience) decide to stay in their careers despite challenging conditions. The study defined mid-career teachers and identified reasons for retention. Using a qualitative research design, a literature review, and primary data collection through interviews, the researcher reported the results of 10 to 15 teachers' perceptions of staying in relation to the role of administration and salary from a small suburban Florida public school district. The researcher used the results to recommend policies and practices to increase mid-career teacher retention.
