'Unlimited Potential' for Higher Education Transformational Change: A Diffusion of Innovations Exploration at Broward College
Jennifer Constantine
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Regent University
The aim of this study is to explore the extent of, and reasons for, the adoption of an educational innovation among post-secondary education practitioners at an open access institution in the Southeastern United States. Informed by Rogers' (2003) diffusion of innovations and Kezar and Eckel's (2002) mobile model for transformational change in higher education, this case study employed an explanatory-sequential, mixed methods approach, with archival data, an electronic survey (n = 332), and in-depth interviews conducted via Zoom (n = 12). Using a random sample from the college's employee population, the survey measures perceptions of Broward UP. Using purposeful sampling, the in-depth interview questions aim to further explore and explain the influence of the perceived attributes and change strategies. Findings suggest that Broward UP embodies most of the characteristics and change strategies supporting adoption. It was adopted by the majority of participants, with administrators and professional technical staff more likely to be engaged than faculty and adjunct faculty members. Adopters were found to be more innovative and cosmopolite than those who chose not to engage with Broward UP. Likewise, the more employees engaged with the innovation, the more favorably they viewed its attributes and change strategies. Apart from voluntariness, all attributes and change strategies were associated with Broward UP. The use of change strategies and the ability to see visible results were the factors found to significantly predict Broward UP adoption among Broward College employees.
