Palacios Moreno, Bianca
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
This qualitative case study examined the higher education phenomenon of internationalization from the perceptions of one private post-secondary institution in South Florida. Open- ended questions from a survey and semi-structured interviews were executed. Participants selected for this study were limited to seven leaders and directors directly involved in the decision-making process of budgeting, strategic planning, as well as the implementation of the recruitment of international students at this private university. General inductive analysis was used to report the data. Once the interviews were done, the primary method of analysis was the pairing of categories from the raw data into a model that brought key themes that the researcher felt relevant for the study. Two major themes emerged: Internationalization as a critical strategy for institutional growth and critical components for successful implementation of Internationalization. Overall, two findings emerged from the results: Leadership effectively implemented internationalization efforts by recognizing this strategy as crucial for institutional growth and that there were key components such as cooperation of all institutional units, the need of support services, the leadership role and financial investment as required to achieve internationalization goals. Recommendations for practice are shared and include: (1) making internationalization comprehensive in terms of college or university personnel's cooperation and involvement from its early stages, (2) learning from peer institutions' implementation of internationalization that at various phases of Knight's internationalization cycle, and (3) ensuring that the planning and review of internationalization receive adequate effort and support on its implementation.
