Teacher Reports of Verbal Aggression in School Settings among Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders
Smith, Stephen W.; Taylor, Gregory G.; Poling, Daniel V.
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (San Antonio, TX, Apr 27-May 1, 2017)
Aggression by students is a highly stable behavior and is a significant predictor for later aggression along with other undesirable outcomes for both the aggressor and victim. While aggression is often thought of in its physical form, acts of verbal aggression are equally problematic and can be especially complex for students who are identified for emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). Thus, we queried 239 teachers of students with EBD to determine prevalence of VA in EBD populations, locales, bystander presence, student response to VA, and administered consequences by teachers. The study provides fundamental knowledge relative to VA in schools among students with EBD and reveals the requisite information that could lead to the development of preventive and intervention efforts.
