School Administrators' Leadership Styles and Special Education Teachers' Tenure: A Correlational Study

The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to explore if and to what extent a correlation existed between school administrators' leadership styles and tenure of school special education teachers in schools in Southwest Florida School District. This study was conducted within the theoretical framework of McGregor's Theory X/Y and Path-Goal Theory. The three research questions were formulated to determine if a correlation existed between school administrators' transformational, transactional and laissez faire leadership styles and the tenure special education teachers. The schools in Southwest Florida School District consisted of 38 schools. The sample size was 33 school administrators' mean scores of their leadership characteristics and paired with the mean of special education teachers' tenure at their perspective schools. The Kendall's Tau-b correlation instrument was utilized to complete the data analysis. There was a moderate positive association and statistically significant correlation between school administrators' transformational leadership style and tenure of special education teachers, tau-b = 0.254, p = 0.045. The null for research question one was rejected. There was no statistically significant correlation between school administrators' transactional leadership style (tau-b = .083, p = 0.504), laissez faire leadership style (tau-b = -0.039, p = 0.756) and tenure of special education teachers. The nulls for research question two and three were accepted. Due to the small sample size, future research could increase the amount participants to determine if the larger sample size would produce different results.
