Student Monitoring through Performance Matters and the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Exam: A Regression Analysis of Student Reading Achievement

Florida, from 1971 to 2014 has used the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) as a yearly accountability tool throughout the education system in the state (Bureau of K-12 Assessment, 2005). Schools use their own assessments to determine if students are making progress throughout the year. In one school district within Florida, Performance Matters (PM) is used quarterly. The regression analysis research study wanted to investigate if the PM reading score could predict the FCAT reading score for the 2013-2014 school year. In order to do this, first a relationship between the two assessments, FCAT and PM, in reading for grades 7 and 8 for the 2013-2014 school year had to be established. Through determining if one score could predict the other score, or by even establishing a relationship between the two assessments, educators will be aided in deciding how to use the data for classroom instruction. A Pearson correlation analysis determined there was a significant relationship between the PM scores and the FCAT scores. Finally, a simple regression analysis for each test was conducted demonstrating FCAT scores could moderately to strongly be predicted by the PM scores for each grade level of the reading assessment. Recommendations were given to analyze the PM against the new state assessment, since the FCAT is no longer used within the state of Florida.
