Postsecondary Campus Security: Report and Recommendations of the Postsecondary Education Planning Commission: 1990--Report 6.
Florida State Postsecondary Education Planning Commission, Tallahassee.
Among 17 conclusions and recommendations of a study on current policies and procedures related to campus safety at Florida institutions of higher education are the following: (1) there is a need for an expanded definition or additional category of crime for recording incidents involving students, either as victims or perpetrators, that occur in locations adjacent to the campus grounds; (2) a single representative statewide organization is needed to represent the security needs and concerns of the state's public and independent colleges and universities; (3) statewide minimum standards should be established for the employment and training of campus security officers; (4) all postsecondary institutions should establish a communications process to enable administrators to inform members of the campus community about security policies and procedures and to receive feedback; and (5) to increase the likelihood of student cooperation, campus administrators should involve students in decisions that affect their safety and security. After a discussion of postsecondary campus security from a national perspective, specifics of campus security in Florida are examined (e.g., residence hall security, campus crime statistics, sanctions for illegal drug use). Appended are a campus security questionnaire, a paper on achieving reasonable campus security, and a checklist for campus security. Contains 10 references. (DB)
