Florida State Postsecondary Education Commission, Tallahassee.
Master's and doctoral programs in the Florida State University System, along with selected programs at private institutions, were studied, with attention to comparative program costs, number of full-time equivalent students, number of degrees conferred, and relationship of program location and market demand. Included are charts indicating all graduate programs offered at nine public institutions and the seven largest graduate institutions in the private sector. In 1984-1985, Florida had a total of 713 master's degree programs, 482 in the public sector and 231 at the seven private institutions selected for study. At the advanced graduate level, 257 doctoral programs were identified in 1984-1985, 194 in the public sector and 63 in the private sector. Seven recommendations concerning graduate education programs are offered. Appendices include: data on the age and part- and full-time status of beginning and advanced graduate students at state universities for fall 1984; a study by Paul T. Brinkman entitled "Cost Analysis of Graduate Education in Florida: Survey and Assessment;" data on average annual occupational demand for selected occupations in regions of Florida, 1985-1990; and information on market demand addressed in program reviews for specific fields of study.
