The 4 Eckerd Wilderness camps are designed to rehabilitate the delinquent, emotionally problemed child between 8 and 14 years of age. Through a contract between the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services and the Eckerd Foundation, the camps provide specialized services to 105 youths per year with budgeting for an average length of stay of 1 year. In 1977 a study was conducted to identify any lasting effects the camping programs had on their clients and to gather feedback information for program improvements. Interviews with 95 ex-campers explored such areas as: (1) demographic data (age, sex, race, family income, home situation, etc); (2) reasons for referral; (3) attitudes toward attending camp and toward staff; and (4) value of camp activities. When asked to list the camp activities that had helped them most with their problems, the respondents rated canoe trips, problem-solving sessions, campsite construction, family-group conferences, pow-wow, back pack trips and bus trips as most important. When asked what they had learned from camp that helped them with their problems today, the respondents named four main tools: controlling temper and not fighting, handling problems as they arose, getting along better with people, and talking things out with others. A large majority (88 out of 95) of the youths returned to school upon release from camp. This document includes survey methodology as well as tabular data. (DS)
