The Florida State Standards Council was created by the Florida Police Standards Act (1967) to improve the state's training program. The adoption of mandatory 200-hour recruit training has provided a program which is meeting local needs for more and better trained law enforcement recruit personnel; there is need for the development and establishment of programs in law enforcement supervision and management. Eighteen junior colleges offer associate degree law enforcement programs; one-year certificate programs are offered by some. Representatives of junior colleges and law enforcement agencies have suggested a core of knowledge in nine law enforcement areas for structuring certificate and associate degree programs. Inservice and educational programs are needed to build and expand the framework of a total program for the state.
