"Hej Seppo, Could You Pls Comment on This!"--Internal Email Communication in Lingua Franca English in a Multinational Company
Kankaanranta, Anne
Business Communication Quarterly, v69 n2 p216-225 2006
Recent turbulence in the corporate world resulting from cross-border mergers and acquisitions and advances in communication technology has meant major changes for internal communication in multinational companies. For example, in Finnish-Swedish mergers the common corporate language is increasingly English even though Swedish has traditionally been the lingua franca of the region. What this means is that English is not a native tongue for either party, but is used as a lingua franca, a common language. Before the recent wave of mergers and acquisitions, Finnish business practitioners used English in company-external communication to carry on international trade, traditional export and import. In such situations, the documents exchanged were format-bound inquiries, quotations, orders, and the like delivered by fax or mail, and export assistants and secretaries took care of the paperwork. At that time, the model for learners of (business) English in Finland was based on a native British English speaker with impeccable language skills. Today, in spite of the expanding use of English as the lingua franca in internal email communication, few studies have focused on messages written by a diverse group of nonnative corporate employees. This article describes a study that examined company-internal email communication and its genres in lingua franca English in a multinational company. The case company was the globally operating paper company Stora Enso, one of the biggest in its field, which was formed through a merger of the Swedish Stora and the Finnish Enso in 1998.
