The Library/Book Fellows Program began in 1986 with a grant to the American Library Association from the U.S. Information Agency, an independent agency within the Executive Branch. The purposes of the program are to: (1) increase international understanding through the establishment of professional and personal relationships and the accomplishment of mutual goals; and (2) enable U.S. librarians and publishers to enrich and broaden their career experience through a 4-month to 1-year period of overseas service. The 1987-89 inaugural class of eight fellows was chosen from more than 200 applicants. Their programs included setting up a system for automating library functions; developing a university-level library science curriculum; training host country librarians in traditional automated information and retrieval techniques; and developing and promoting American studies collections in host countries. This booklet presents recollections of the fellows' experiences in Chile, Finland, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Mauritius, and Turkey, together with profiles of the fellows and an overview of each program.
