Studies in the Major Modern Languages (English, German, French) at University Level in Denmark by 1980/81.
Dollerup, Cay
This is a descriptive outline of the language situation in the Danish education system. The introductory material discusses the reason for foreign language study. A major reason is that Denmark is a small country with a difficult native language for speakers of other languages to learn. Therefore, the Danish population is exposed to foreign languages through the media, tourism, and international business. The paper then describes the following: (1) the educational system and requirements, and the basic outline of the foreign language course from elementary school through the university; (2) contents of the course of studies in English, French, and German, including a description of the final evaluation at the end of the undergraduate program and a brief notation on language study at the graduate level; and (3) the shift in emphasis toward more flexible curricula and the special objectives of university level courses, which extend beyond communicative competence.
