This report provides state summary tables and district reports of graduation rates, dropout rates, and expulsion rates in Colorado. The graduation rate is a cumulative or longitudinal rate that calculates the number of students who actually graduate as a percent of those who were in membership and could have graduated. The dropout rate is an annual rate reflecting the percentage of all students enrolled in grades 7 through 12 who leave school during the reporting period and are not known to transfer to other public or private schools. For school districts with alternative schools for those who have dropped out or are at risk, the district graduation rate, a completer rate, and a dropout rate are calculated with and without the alternative schools. The Colorado graduation rate for the class of 1997 is 78.5%, an increase of 0.8 percentage points from the rate reported for the class of 1996. Thirty-five percent of all Colorado schools had a graduation rate at or above 90%. The 1996-97 school year dropout rate was 3.6%, a decrease of 0.4% from 1995-96. About one-third of the 1995-96 dropouts returned to school the following year. In all, in 1996-97, 48,165 students were suspended for a suspension rate of 7.3%. Nearly 73% of those suspended were male, and 58.1% were white. A total of 1,959 students were expelled, for a rate of 0.3%.
