The teaching of English in the People's Republic of China has received much attention in recent years. The two papers included here deal with the teaching of the English language and English and American literature to Chinese students. The first, a summary of a questionnaire survey, "Why Bother about Culture in English Language Teaching?" (Hu Wenzhong), concludes that in designing English language courses, the customs, habits, and the ways of life of English-speaking people should be taken into account as well as the "high civilization" type of culture. The second paper, "A Walking Footnote: Teaching American and English Literature to Chinese Students" (Deborah Leonard), is a personal account of the author's teaching experience at the Beijing Language Institute.
