Lessons Learned from Aboriginal Students' Housing Experiences: Supporting Aboriginal Student Success
Pidgeon, Michelle; Rogerson, Chris
Journal of College and University Student Housing, v44 n1 p48-73 2017
Student housing plays a critical role in student development and retention by providing diverse experiences, resources, and opportunities that support students' academic pursuits. In Canada, Aboriginal students' retention rates are significantly lower than those of their non- Aboriginal counterparts, so it is the purpose of this article to explore the role that student housing plays in supporting Aboriginal student success. We explore this relationship through secondary data analysis of data from the Aboriginal Housing Research Project (AHRP) that involved student surveys, sharing circles, and interviews with housing staff at six colleges and universities in British Columbia; and data from an Educational Benchmarking, Inc.-Canadian Resident Assessment (EBI-CRA) survey carried out at one university, also in British Columbia. Additionally, we conducted a content analysis of the Aboriginal student housing policies of all Western Canadian public universities to further understand Aboriginal students' housing experiences on and off campus. While acknowledging that on-campus housing continues to evolve to support Aboriginal student success, our research shows that more work is needed with respect to the 3Ps of properties, policy, and practice.
