Academic Dual Credit Students: Experiences and Performance in the BC Post-Secondary System
British Columbia Council on Admissions and Transfer
The British Columbia Council on Admissions & Transfer (BCCAT) commissioned Plaid Consulting to conduct a study focused on Academic Dual Credit (ADC) in British Columbia post-secondary institutions (PSIs). This study follows up on a 2017 BCCAT study on dual credit programs "Dual Credit Programs: Exploring Dual Credit Student Transition and Post-Secondary Academic Success" (Drover-Davidson, Betts, Bennett & Hodgson, 2017). Four BC PSIs were elected to participate in this research: Camosun College (Camosun), Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), North Island College (NIC), and Thompson Rivers University (TRU). The report begins with providing a provincial context for participation in ADC, examining how many students participate in ADC and then transfer to BC public post-secondary institutions. Following this, information from interviews with school district administrators who oversee ADC activities within their district is provided. The next section includes four case studies of British Columbia public post-secondary institutions that are involved in ADC programs: Camosun College, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, North Island College, and Thompson Rivers University. The case studies include a comparison of student performance and demographics between ADC and non-ADC students, and results from a survey focused on the experience of students who participated in ADC at the institution. Finally, suggestions are provided for future research. [This report was prepared by Plaid Consulting.
