Proceedings of the Subcommittee on Childhood Experiences as Causes of Criminal Behaviour, Senate of Canada, Third Session, Thirtieth Parliament, 1977-78. Issue No. 6.
Senate Committee of Canada (Ontario). Standing Senate Committee on Health, Welfare and Science.
Experiences in prenatal life and early childhood that may cause personality disorders or criminal behavior in later life are examined in these proceedings of the Subcommittee on Childhood Experiences as Causes of Criminal Behavior, of the Standing Committee on Health, Welfare and Science, Senate of Canada. This issue, the sixth in a series of 19 hearings dating from November 1977 to July 1978, presents expert testimony by Professor Cyril Greenland. The testimony begins with a brief prepared statement by the witness concerning his background in social work, his interest in the problems of disturbed and delinquent children, and a description of his research and findings related to the question of childhood experiences as causes of criminal behavior. Questions from subcommittee members concerned funding problems for research on crime; the effects of unwanted births and of slum environments, poverty and poor nutrition on criminality; how to judge the fitness of parents; the effects of day care on young children; the role of genetics in criminality; the promotion of aggression in society; the relation between alcohol abuse and criminality and between minimal brain damage and criminality. A list of recent publications by the witness relating to violence and dangerous behavior is provided in the appendix. The text of the hearings is presented in both English and French. (Author/SS)
