Canadian libraries have used Machine-readable Cataloging (MARC) since its beginnings in 1966, mainly for speeding up the cataloging of American imprints. The lack of bilingualism in Library of Congress MARC records was a major deficiency in Canada where bilingual access points are provided for all publications in the national bibliography, "Canadiana," and where bilingual publications are cataloged in both English and French. In 1973, work began on a Canadian MARC format with bilingual access points, and Canadian MARC tapes were soon being produced. MARC serial record creation was scheduled to begin with the publication of the 1975 issues of "Canadiana." For libraries that could not afford to create full MARC records, Mini-MARC, a subset of Canadian MARC containing the minimum acceptable amount of data to uniquely identify a record, was developed.
