Fecher, Natalie; Johnson, Elizabeth K. – Developmental Science, 2019
Bilingual and monolingual infants differ in how they process linguistic aspects of the speech signal. But do they also differ in how they process non-linguistic aspects of speech, such as who is talking? Here, we addressed this question by testing Canadian monolingual and bilingual 9-month-olds on their ability to learn to identify native…

"Language Lives in Our Bodies Not Just in Our Heads": Embodied Reading and Becoming beyond the Molar
Carroll, Shawna M. – Canadian Modern Language Review, 2022
This article focuses on one aspect of a literacy research project: how reading and language enable embodied processes that allow for fluidity and becomings outside of the static, molar normative discourse in society and consequently in language education. I explain how one research participant continues becoming outside of white settler-colonial…

Zaidi, Rahat – Journal of Literacy Research, 2020
This collaborative action research project in Alberta, Canada, explored how dual-language books (DLBs) can foster literacy instruction and learner engagement through language awareness. Canada's changing demographics have resulted in mother tongue diversity and many urban schools identifying at least 25% of students as being English language…

Bialystok, Ellen – International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, 2018
Bilingual education has been an educational option in many countries for over 50 years but it remains controversial, especially in terms of its appropriateness for all children. The present review examines research evaluating the outcomes of bilingual education for language and literacy levels, academic achievement, and suitability for children…

Strickland, Brandee Marie – Language Learning Journal, 2019
In this article, I explore practical implications of the theories of language of M.M. Bakhtin within university second language writing classrooms. Specifically, I examine the presence of Bakhtinian intertextuality within online intercultural exchanges involving the use of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) technology. I describe a CMC exchange…

Llama, Raquel; López-Morelos, Luz Patricia – International Journal of Multilingualism, 2016
In several studies it is highlighted that the early acquisition of a language in the home results in phonetic and phonological benefits, and that it is not uncommon for early learners to achieve native-like pronunciation in their heritage language. However, most of these studies have been carried out with bilinguals. The present contribution aims…

McGregor, Meredith Jocelyn Jane – Latin American Journal of Content and Language Integrated Learning, 2016
Cognates have served as a useful tool for investigating the bilingual lexicon in many studies, but very little research has been carried out on different types of cognates, specifically, partial cognates and their role in cross-linguistic effect. The present study examines cognate effect in the speech production and acceptability judgment of two…

Deacon, S. Helene; Chen, Xi; Luo, Yang; Ramirez, Gloria – Journal of Research in Reading, 2013
We present the results of an empirical test of the hypothesis that transfer of orthographic processing to reading occurs when the scripts under acquisition are written with the same unit (specifically, the same alphabet). We tested 97 Spanish-English bilingual children in Grades 4 and 7. We measured mother's education level, verbal and nonverbal…

Guerrer, Carmen Helena – HOW, 2010
This article aims at contributing to the ongoing discussion about how bilingualism is understood in the current National Bilingualism Plan (PNB for its initials in Spanish). Based on previous research and discussions held at academic events, it is evident that the promoters of the PNB use the term "bilingualism" in a rather…

Guardado, Martin – Journal of Language, Identity, and Education, 2010
This article, part of a larger study, examines three middle-class, Hispanic Canadian families' conceptualizations of language, culture, and identity. Via an analysis of interview data, the findings indicate that the parents assigned diverse meanings to heritage language development (HLD) and held high expectations for their children's formation of…

Each pair of papers is followed by the remarks of the official discussants. The papers and their authors are:…

Kolers, Paul A.; Gonzalez, Esther – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1980
Synonyms within languages were compared with exact repetition of words as aids to recall. Interlingual synonyms had effects identical to those of exact repetition, whereas intralingual synonyms were less effective than exact repetition. Bilingual equivalence of words does not appear to be due to common underlying semantic structures. (Author/RD)
