The Leaving School Early (LSE) Program, established in 1975, is designed for 14- and 15-year-olds who find none of the public school programs suitable. Applicants are assessed by a social worker and an individualized work or education contract written. LSE participants are monitored by teacher advisors. (SJL)

Of 157 grade 11-12 students surveyed in Alberta, most worked part-time. Most working students focused on making money and devoted minimal time to schoolwork. Of 156 first-year college students surveyed, 37% were employed part-time; 15% of these (and 30% of education majors) were gaining career-related work experience. (SV)
