Provides a perspective on the relevance of conceptual complexity theory to counseling. Some origins of conceptual complexity theory are traced and descriptions of current theoretical positions are provided. Compared the relative effectiveness of three self-management procedures in enhancing self-esteem. Results indicated that it is possible to enhance reported self-esteem by self-management procedures and that cueing effects are as important as reinforcing effects. (KMF)
