The Impact of Interactive Video Platforms on Students' Performance and Attitudes
Ali Rezaei
Journal of Interactive Learning Research, v35 n2 p167-194 2024
Educational tools like EdPuzzle, PlayPosit, and Kaltura have gained recent attention, as they purportedly empower educators to incorporate questions, quizzes, and discussions into instructional videos. However, there is no empirical evidence on how or under what circumstances these platforms may impact students' learning. A quasi-experimental study plus a survey of students' experience evaluated the impact of such tools on students' learning by recording and analyzing their interactions with assigned video clips over multiple semesters. The results indicate a generally positive impact of interactive video platforms, but their influence on conceptual learning and understanding is significantly influenced by teaching and assessment strategies. The impact was also shown to vary based on the video settings, video length, and the nature and level of the questions (prompts) infused in the platform. This study targets teachers who want to infuse video viewing as part of their students' assessments, but they may perceive video viewing as passive individual activity. The literature review offers a brief history and theoretical justification for using video in education, alongside a concise assessment of modern platforms' limitations and strengths for teachers frequently using video in their courses.
