Analyzing the Effectiveness of Soft Skill Development Curriculum for Underachieving High School Freshmen
Kati Marie Graham Begen
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Southern Wesleyan University
Studies show that students are less successful in their freshman year of high school than in elementary and middle school. The causes of this decline in success range from new schedules, changing of relationships, increased rigor, and less involvement from educators. This applied study will explore the effectiveness of soft skill interventions in enhancing underachieving student success as they matriculate through their first year of high school at Duncan Polytechnical High School. This multimethod applied study will examine a small group of underachieving freshmen who earn below a 2.0-grade point average and will participate in an intervention program for one quarter to support students. The qualitative component will include interviews with randomly selected students from the test group and an analysis of the written component from the students' deliverables. The quantitative data will analyze the grade point averages and compare quarters one and two. The purpose of this study is to teach students soft skills transferable to their academic requirements and social-emotional growth and then make the deliverable available to all students at this site.
