Toward the Development of an Anti-Racist Academic Identity for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Learners in First Year Writing at Two Universities in the State of California
Joseph Navarro
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Indiana University of Pennsylvania
This study had a dual focus. First, the study sought to understand the impact of policy on praxis. This was achieved through a Critical Policy Analysis of Assembly Bill 705 (AB705), a California law that attempts to reduce the number of non-credit courses required to earn required courses in college composition and mathematics. Second, the study explored the nature of praxis shaped by policy. Codes and themes from the Critical Policy Analysis of AB 705 were utilized to develop an Anti-Racist First Year Writing course that supports both the California state requirements for First Year Writing under AB705's guidelines; and provides a framework for developing racial literacy for BIPOC students. The Anti-Racist First Year Writing courses were developed for San Jose State University and the University of California Santa Cruz. The data for the study included AB705 and the Critical Reflexive Journal. The work will then present several themes and the deliverables in the form of the course syllabus and material.
