An Exploration on the Perceptions of Educators Using the MOVE Program
Shirley Jean
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
Individuals with orthopedic impairments often have trouble with range of motion and may experience barriers in participating in physical activities with peers. This qualitative study explores school site personnel's overall perceptions using the Mobility Opportunities via Experience (MOVE) program among individuals with orthopedic impairments in public elementary and secondary California schools. This study will present data on social-emotional growth outcomes, attitudes of school site staff, functional mobility, and progress among orthopedic impairment students involved in the MOVE program through the perception of school site personnel. Using Mezirow's transformative learning theory, a qualitative phenomenological research design will be implemented among MOVE certified school site personnel with purposeful homogeneous sampling strategy (n = 15). This research will be applied in California elementary and secondary schools through online interviews and telephone interviews. The study results indicated that school site personnel who implement the MOVE program had seen a positive result in the student's gross motor skills and ability to perform weight-bearing activities. Mobility programs can be implemented in school districts to increase independence, social skills, and the ability to perform weight-bearing activities.
