Comparing the Technostress Experienced by U.S. Higher Education Faculty, Administrators, and Staff

The purpose of this quantitative comparative study was to examine differences in five components of technostress across three employee groups (Faculty, Administrators, and Staff) in U.S. higher education. Jena and Mahanti's technostress-demographic model provided the theoretical framework for this study. The five components of technostress included techno-overload, techno-invasion, techno-complexity, techno-insecurity, and techno-uncertainty. Data was collected on SurveyMonkey from a convenience sample of 178 U.S. workers from one higher education institution in Southern California. Of the 178 participants, 162 had complete data, including 51 Faculty, 55 Administrative, and 56 Staff. The overall research question asked to what extent there was a statistically significant difference in the five components of technostress across three employee groups. The results of the one-way MANOVA revealed that the effect of employee groups on the components of technostress was statistically significant, Wilks' Lambda = 0.60, F (10, 310) = 8.93, p < 0.001. The effect size was large (Partial [eta]2 = 0.22). Univariate ANOVA follow-up tests revealed significant group differences in techno-invasion (F (2,159) = 17.25, p < .001), techno-complexity (F (2,159) = 6.13, p = 0.003), and techno-insecurity (F (2,159) = 4.53, p = 0.012). The results are relevant to U.S. higher education employee groups and can be used to develop targeted training and support programs aimed at lessening specific aspects of technostress experienced by the affected groups.
