The Effect of Distance Education Biology Laboratories on Student Success at One California Community College

The purpose of this quantitative pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study was to examine the effect on student success rates in biology courses with laboratory components taken via distance education at a California community college. This study examined success rates for nine different courses, including 98 sections (2,299 students) taught only face-to-face in the 2018--2019 academic year as compared to mean success rates for 114 sections (2,145 students) taught only via distance education in the 2020-2021 academic year. Using two-sample t-tests, the results showed mean student success rates significantly increased for 66 sections, showed no significant difference in 46 sections, and decreased significantly in two sections when taken via distance education. Using a difference of two proportions z-test results showed the overall proportion of students with success significantly increased when biology courses with laboratories were taken online.
