Leung School of Accounting Enrollment: A Critical Action Research Study on Increasing Enrollment
Vasken A. Kederian
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D./HE Dissertation, Azusa Pacific University
This study aimed to increase enrollment in accounting degree programs at Azusa Pacific University's Leung School of Accounting (LSA). Forty-four undergraduate students, four graduate students, and five faculty members participated in surveys and Zoom discussions to provide insight into two potential initiatives intended to increase accounting enrollment: (a) the creation and implementation of an accounting minor for undergraduate students, and (b) the creation and implementation of a pathway for nonaccounting students for acceptance into the master of accountancy (MAcc) program. Following data analysis, LSA personnel implemented both initiatives. Follow-up inquiry revealed the 11 undergraduates enrolled in the accounting minor were very satisfied with their experience, as were the four graduate students intending to enroll in the master of accountancy program upon approval and completion of bridge coursework. Although initial results are promising, more time is needed to ascertain the effectiveness of these enrollment initiatives. Practical implications from this study include benchmarking enrollment initiatives against peer and aspirational institutions, ensuring a positive experience in the Principles of Accounting course sequence, and recruiting students seeking a career change who are motivated to make a difference.
