Conceptualizing the Problems and Possibilities of Cross-Professional Preservice Preparation for Educators
Charles, Jessica; Stone, Susan I.
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (San Antonio, TX, Apr 27-May 1, 2017)
Recent educational programs and initiatives hinge on effective collaboration between education professionals, such as school social workers, school psychologists, teachers, and principals. Our inquiry seeks to build on prior conceptual work to unpack the collaborative stance of school social workers by examining how they conceptualize their role in relationship to other school professionals, and better understand the actual work school social workers describe doing with other adults in school settings. Drawing on the theoretical frame put forth by Little (1990) that maps the terrain of teachers' professional relations, this study adapts that frame to look more deeply at how school social workers (n=39) report collaborating with other professionals. To triangulate our findings, we also draw on responses by 14 teachers, 5 school psychologists, and 4 principals. These professionals responded to a hypothetical case study designed to elicit collaborative practices. We identified five collaboration types. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.
