Health and Safety in the Child Care Setting: Prevention of Injuries. Module 2. Second Edition. A Curriculum for the Training of Child Care Providers.
Zamani, A. Rahman, Ed.
This curriculum module is intended to help childcare providers understand how injuries happen and how, by planning ahead and taking simple precautions, most injuries can be avoided. The 3- to 5-hour curriculum is designed to fulfill the learning needs and licensing requirements of childcare providers in California. Introductory remarks present information on trainer qualifications, discuss how the module should be used, highlight the importance of including parents in creating a healthy environment, and discuss how developmentally appropriate practices must be the foundation of teaching children healthy habits. Each of the subsequent topic sections begins with a trainer sheet that covers goal/rationale, learning objectives, methods and learning strategies to be used, materials and equipment required, and training time for each topic or section. The topics covered in this module are: (1) understanding injuries in the childcare setting; (2) risk of injuries related to stages of development; (3) safety policies and behavior development; (4) regular safety checks of indoor and outdoor environments; (5) motor vehicle, transportation, and pedestrian safety; (6) child abuse; (7) sudden infant death syndrome; (8) burns and fire; (9) mechanical airway obstruction: choking, strangulation, and suffocation; (10) falls; (11) poisoning; (12) oral/dental injury; (13) shaken baby syndrome; (14) drowning; (15) firearm injuries; (16) emergency procedures; (17) toy safety; and (18) back injury among providers. Three appendices contain resources, sample forms, and a six-item bibliography. (KB)
