Health and Safety in the Child Care Setting: Prevention of Infectious Disease. Module 1. Second Edition. A Curriculum for the Training of Child Care Providers.
Zamani, A. Rahman, Ed.; Calder, Judy, Ed.; Cohen, Adena, Ed.
This curriculum module provides information and guidance on controlling communicable and infectious diseases in the childcare setting and is designed to fulfill the learning needs and licensing requirements of childcare providers in California. The curriculum provides 4 to 7 hours of training for childcare providers to be conducted by experienced health and safety trainers, childcare health consultants, and registered nurses or licensed physicians with professional experience in infection control and childcare knowledge and certification. The module's introductory remarks describe qualifications for trainers, discuss how the module is to be used, and list important topics to cover for trainers with a limited amount of time. The remainder of the training module is divided into four sections. Section 1 presents information on the ways disease is spread in childcare settings. Section 2 focuses on preventive health practices, including the daily morning health check, universal precautions, hand washing, garbage disposal, food safety, oral hygiene, and water supply. Section 3 highlights preventive health policies, including policies related to health history and immunization, providers' needs, health records, exclusion for illness, caring for children with mild illness, medications administration, and emergency illness. At the beginning of each section is a trainer sheet detailing the goal/rationale for the section, learning objectives, methods or learning strategies to be used; a list of materials and equipment required; and training time for each topic or section. Section 4 contains appendices with resources, forms/records/lists, information on specific diseases, and a 10-item bibliography. (KB)
