California is one of the few states in which school districts have a legal responsibility for accidents involving students while they are participating in assigned school activities. This guide was prepared to help school administrators and teachers evaluate their safety instruction programs and industrial education facilities in accordance with the legal requirements of California's education and government codes and occupational safety and health legislation. The first section of the guide quotes parts of the codes on accident liability and required safety instruction, legal provisions for school eye safety, industrial education work station safety, and legal bases for teacher negligence. A safety instruction program in industrial education is outlined in the second section. The third presents safety requirements applicable to industrial education facilities and equipment from the California Occupational Safety and Health Act, as detailed in general industry safety orders which cover safety requirements for business and industry.
