Leading a Learning Organisation: Australian Early Years Centres as Learning Networks
Colmer, Kaye
European Early Childhood Education Research Journal, v16 n1 p107-115 Mar 2008
Established in 1940, Lady Gowrie Child Centres in Australia provide integrated early childhood programs and develop and share project work, information, resources and training at local and national levels. While changes in social policy compromised their provision of integrated programs, the centre in Adelaide has made real strides towards moving back to its multi-disciplinary roots. That process has required the development and leadership of a dynamic learning organisation, managing as well as leading change, and inspiring and motivating staff through devolved leadership and reflectivity. Shared leadership helped in addressing creatively many complex issues: evaluating and meeting the needs of families and children; supporting and developing reflective practice and multi-disciplinary working at all levels; and valuing and encouraging staff with different professional training, pay and conditions. Investment in staff training and development led to extended learning networks and high-quality, integrated provision for children and families.
