Advanced Mathematics Enrolment Numbers: A Crisis or Fake News?
Jennings, Michael
Australian Mathematics Education Journal, v4 n1 p33-45 2022
There are substantial and ongoing concerns in the Australian and international secondary and tertiary education sectors about students' transition from secondary to tertiary mathematics. Of recent concern is the number of students choosing Advanced Mathematics (AM) in the last two years of secondary school. Declining enrolments in AM in secondary school are a major concern for the future of STEM education in Australia. To better understand this apparent crisis, Michael Jennings investigates participation rates for the past 20-25 years in AM in the last two years of secondary school in Australia's three most populous states, Queensland, New South Wales (NSW), and Victoria. He finds that the state-by-state picture is very different to the current narrative.
