Intellectual Disability, Sexuality and Gender: Inclusive Narrative and Story Methods. Sage Research Methods: Diversifying and Decolonizing Research
Patsie Frawley
Sage Research Methods Cases
The case study focuses on the co-development of stories about sexuality and gender with people with disabilities in Australian and New Zealand research that used inclusive research methods and narrative research approaches. Outlined in this case study are key aspects of the research from ethics to dissemination, looking closely at the researcher-participant engagement for the co-development of the stories as narrative research. It also outlines advisory structures and approaches that engage people with disabilities as co-researchers with a particular focus on co-analysis, and codesign of research outputs, reflecting disability inclusive research principles. Readers will gain insights into the processes and approaches that underpin narrative research within research that aims to place people with disabilities at the center of research that is 'about' them. The example of the case study will show readers that through the narrative research approach and participatory inclusive research methods, research can be 'with' and 'by' people with disabilities.
